When I was a kid in Brooklyn, I asked my mother what all those gold stars were in people’s windows. She told me that they were the homes of people who had sons who were fighting for us, had sons who had died for us.
I have never stopped feeling that sense of awe and terror and gratitude that I felt then.
So, enjoy the day. Spend time with friends and family. And say a “thank you” for those who have protected our values.
